If you look around the game of American Football. You will hardly ever see where a CB batted a Pass. You will see where The D-Line is noted for Batting Passes.

Better defensive line: Eagles or Giants? – Blogging the bEast

Jun 15, 2012 ... In 2011, he batted 10 passes at the line of scrimmage. That was more batted balls at the line than the entire Eagles' team had last year. In fact ...

I believe that separating the Defensive Line from the Defensive Backs in the Pass Deflection Stat would be interesting. Can we Have Batted Passes as a Stat for Our Defensive Linemen?

it's counted as a pass deflection

you want a separate category for PDs that happen near the LOS?

Why Not...

I know its determined as a PD. Although, it is noted in Football as a Batted Pass. They are the same, However the Terminology is different.

It would be nice to see some Linemen with a High Count of Batted passes. They are put in the PD category, and will most likely never get an award for Pass Deflections. However, they might with the Most Batted Passes.

Unnecessary stat.

I too have a dot built for this, but it's such an easy stat to calculate. Besides, any agent building a dot for this should be keeping track of the dot's progress in that area anyway. How would it even impact GLB anyways? A deflection is a deflection, regardless of who is behind it. In fact, I think it's more important to keep track of LB and DB deflections. Even then, it's most valuable in the analysis of the individual dot rather than from a team aspect.

As far as an award....drivel. I see sacks, hurries, and tackles for losses being much more important for the D-line. A dot could suck in these areas, but still win an award for batted passes? Nope. I just don't see it being a worthwhile venture.

I can foresee an issue when DE's could "bat a pass" while near the LOS on one play... then drop into coverage on another and "deflect a pass". Anytime you start to try to split hairs things get "buggy" and more bugs we don't need.

For what it's worth, my team just played it's biggest match up of the regular season. This game decided home field advantage through the conference championship, and they are likely the same team I will play in that game, meaning one of us will have a shot at the league championship. My team deflected 60% of the opponent's pass attempts. Just 3 of the 30 deflections were by the D-line, and 2 of those 3 were by my own DE. Another 14 were by CBs, 5 by the Safeties, and 8 by the LBs, including 1 by my own LB (who's a blitzer, not coverage).

We lead the league in deflections, but this was the first time we played a team this season on our own level (not below our level, and also a team good at deflecting passes). Of the 30 deflections, 24 came in the 2nd half (score was 12 - 7, my team ahead, at halftime). We shut their offense down, and went on to win 48 -7. Like I said, this was a meaningful game....with a human owner. Their DC actually came to me, offering to join my team during the offseason. I left the door open, even though my team was just about set for the season. He's actually run a good defense. Just so happens, my defense was better. That's partly because of what I recruited, and partly because of how I set up my D-line, LBs, and DBs. I know what I want from the different positions.

Deflections on D-line are just a bonus, and my DE was built for them because he's designed to take on double-teams. In other words, a batted pass usually means the DL was unable to get past the blocking quick enough. It's a last resort, not the primary focus.

Btw, my DE also had 2 sacks and 3 hurries in that game, playing LDE. He was the only DL to accomplish that trifecta in the game. Not necessarily tooting my own horn, but simply highlighting the priorities I've mentioned.
