I love seeing how far away an FAQ thread can get from the original topic...

I'm an American who has spent most of the past 12 years outside the states and have just recently returned...I worked abroad and with co-workers who were almost all non-Americans. It gives one a great perspective on how the rest of the world sees the US but also on how much different in attitude we Americans hold our "Americaness." Very few nationalities have the same spirit, particularly considering that what it is to be an American isn't necessarily tied to any particular ethnicity/creed/race/religion/background/etc, which is very unlike most nationalities with a similarly strong sense of national unity.

Americanism or whatever you want to call it transcends even being American. The US is one the very few countries in the world where people who are not Americans still risk their lives trying to get here to become Americans--even while too many current Americans try to scapegoat their own problems on these new arrivals.
