Where or how do we learn about creating a custom O & D playbook during the first 3 or 4 seasons
of building our team? As it seem very important to be able to successfully manage custom plays to be able to compete against the better teams.

trial and error .... what works best for your team .... what works best against the opponent .... it constantly changes for some ..... for some , they remain the same for a while .....

Also need to really watch a lot (if not all) of your games for some time. Learn which plays work better (yes... there are plays that simply suck and others that rock) than others.
And then the fun starts because you'll need multiple packages for several reasons. #1, not all teams attack/defend the same. #2, running the same old packages out there all the time will lead to you being handed your lunch when you face a team that scouts well and see's your approach never changes. #3, What CA said... Dots come and dots go and certain plays in your package might not work with some of those changes (example... if you started with 4 DT's and 4 DE's... then lose a DT but gain a LB... you might need to have much more 3-4 defenses and much less 4-3 styles). I'm sure there is more but that's a start.
