the problem would be some dumbass's trying to keep the highest number of posts. so they would constantly spam the forums just to get their post number up. which in turn would cause people that could care less about the post count to stay away from forums even more than they do now.

Have you spent time on any forums?
No one really does this.
The people who chat on the forums generate large enough post counts that someone posting just to pad their number would be well daunted by the challenge.
I mean you and I are probably well into the tens of thousands of posts here.
