Teams get to choose a team in their league (or optionally in a tourney they were in) as a Rival. The team they pick has to have a long term or quality relationship with them (been in the same league for several seasons or played big games or multiple close games or be close in standings). When you play a conference/tourney game against a Rival you get a plus to player performance and for home games fan support, the amount possibly varying with the quality and length of the rivalry.
And you get to sell Cowboys Suck T Shirts in the concession stands.
