My solution? I suggest that GLB starts an advertising campaign as well as sends out a one time automated email to all inactive users. There has been no effort (at least from what I've witnessed) from the devs to attract new users. Up until this point it has been by user referral only. I love this game and feel that DD and Bort have not tapped this game's potential.
Please don't hesitate one more day. Put your game out there for people to see. Hell, you could put half naked chicks in your ads. It worked for Evony and it's a shitty game but has a very massive userbase.
I love the idea of marketing, but as many people have stated in one way or another, it makes little to no sense to market a product that is not complete. Granted, that thought is based off the premise that Bort plans on bringing this game out of Beta some day.... However, if his end-goal is an ever-evolving sim, then yes, they should be marketing the game, as it is relatively complete. But the idea of a Beta, in my mind, is a game tested by a select group (aren't we so lucky?) so that it can be refined and almost perfected, all the bugs worked out, etc. So we are that select testing ground, working out the bugs and constantly playing catch up, but in the end, the game is marketed heavily, Bort has a few thousand word-of-mouth advertising agents, and a non-Beta version is rolled out after Bort drops a large chunk of change buying a quick spot on ESPN's and CBS's and FOX's fantasy football segments. The influx of new agents more than makes up for the additional cost, and BAM! Insta-rich.
And as for treating the new users better, I never had an issue with the people in the forums, but I suppose that's because I'm a "why?" person. If I see a response that says "retire him" my first instinct is to ask why. At which point the VAST majority of the user base will gladly tell you exactly why, and offer all the help in the world.
Originally posted by Ken1 What if they sold advertising and that allowed them to lower the cost of flex? If there were no pop-ups or pop-unders and no moving or changing images, the static images/Google ads type or ads would be worth it to me in return for cheaper flex (unless they had TONS of ads or something). And then they get more players, who might play if the game were less expensive. If they got enough new players, their revenue from flex might not even decrease.
I tried to reach someone important to advertise my game site and put an ad on here but that got shot down really fast.

The fact that Bort and DD have been making a sizable profit from the userbase for almost four years pretty much takes "wait for the game to go live" out of the discussion imo. It's basically been live for the last 3 1/2 years and has just carried the beta tag. Perpetual betas should advertise imo.

They are probably making a shit ton of money and just letting it ride out.
