I have a +5 Protect piece and 14 total with equip in it. Which is better? The player is lvl 67...

The perfect world scenario would be to have a minimum of 3 AEQ items. 2 items of hold block chance and 1 item of protect. You will need to do the math to see if you will have 240 X 3 BT plus any additional BT to enhance or create the other items.

Long story short hold block percent AEQ is currently the best possible AEQ any O lineman can have. Stacking it is almost mandatory in the pros and above because most the best D Linemen have stacked their break block chance AEQ.

Protect for a LT is the best possible SA to have. Taking it past 9 is debatable. For most my older players I have sold SA AEQ items in favor of appropriate SA items. Then I used my remaining SP to fill my SAs. It is not easy but it can be done.

would you take Protect even over Pummel? High Pummel fires pretty much every down, whereas Protect will only possibly fire on passes.

Hell yes I'd take Protect over Pummel.

While Pummel may fire every down, Protect is a legit SA that's been buffed several times. After watching morale in last season's sim, I don't see as much of a benefit from Pummel.

I'd take Protect over Pummel even on a non-LT.

Pummel is an extra SA. Meaning it is the first in line so you do not have to spend any SP on other SAs to increase its value. Protect is the last SA in its tree and costs an extra point for each level as well as having to invest in all other SAs in the tree first. So protect AEQ is by far more valuable than pummel AEQ.
