Is it defensive AI that causes the FS to retreat after the ball has been handed off before finally running towards the ball carrier?

assumed that due to the velocity of the carrier he would need to go downfield to get the tackle. It happens to a lesser degree on many plays I've seen

the beginning part, before he notices that it's even a run, he's going into his zone. Pretty sure that's a default starting point, though I don't like it.

The beginning part I understand, but the decision to run 13 yards further downfield (which puts him 20 yards away from the ball carrier) is really illogical (as evidenced by the fact that he then had to run 10 yards back towards the LOS in order to get to the runner).

Angles on the weak side of a play are weird on running plays. Call it growing pains.
