I hear all these things about either a receiving TE or blocking TE. I understand this. What I don't understand is if you can make a sort of hybrid thing (I want my level 1 TE to become something like a 60/40 blocking/receiving TE). How would I do this?

You could do it but it would be awful. Pick one or the other.

Okay. But I mean, it's not too much to ask to have a mostly blocking Tight End who could have some good catching attributes (as in, he could actually be part of the offense and get some points or whatnot), is it?

Yes, it is.

you only have a certain amount of skill points. the best receivers will put ALL their points in attributes that get them open and get them yards. the best blockers will put ALL their points in attributes that maximize pancakes and finding/holding blocks vs defenders.

the best teams will try and sign the best rec te and the best blocking te they can. and since custom depth charts make it easy to sub the receiver in for the blocker, any combo guy is just a shitty not-quite-jack-of-two-trades-that-sucks-at-both.

You can make a successful hybrid, there's plenty of casual teams that you could be useful on.
