This particular DE yes it was all about his First Step. It was the season DE's got nerfed to hell. I am not a huge fan of taking SA's past 10 though.

It seems silly to take it too high. First step basically causes you to get to the lineman faster, when the ball is snapped, before they are in position to block you. It's helpful, but you can only get that "first step" so fast.

Yeah first step is more of a instantaneous speed boost from a dead stop isn't it? The higher it is the better chance you have of it firing and the faster/further your dot will travel when it does fire... Does this sound about right?

Its important, but you cant neglect STR like you could before. Its low on tree so id do it gradually.
