Forum > Position Talk > WR Club > Do WRs need to have elite speed early on as everybody seems to imply?

I've read a lot of posts in this forum, and it seems like the common consensus is that all WR builds should start by 3rd capping speed and agility, with speed WRs taking both further, and possession variations of WRs rounding out.

So, I have to wonder...if an entire team is built with little to no speed at the WR position, but elite catching, jumping, strength, and vision, will the passing game still be viable?

No need to get "elite speed", unless you're making a speed WR. At the same time, you can't just ignore it completely. It all depends on your build.

Now, a team full of slow possession receivers with good hands COULD work if you had an accurate QB and ran short routes. However, at least one speed WR should be used in my opinion, as the 'deep threat guy'. This way, you can nickel and dime your way down the field for scores, but if you fall behind, you have an option late in the 4th quarter.

Probably, but getting open is still an element or else your QB will feel excessive hurry pressure and lose morale quickly and his pass quality will suffer. Bad pass quality can't really be overcome.

Depends on what you mean by "elite speed" ... WR's need some speed, but Im not sure really high speed is really meaningful due to Zone Specialist and CB's not needing speed to actually keep up.

just one player
http://goallineblitz.com/game/player.pl?player_id=1122881
softcapped speed/agi, all SP/equipment invested in attributes to win the catching roll

would be interesting to try an offense full of them if more of his kind existed. maybe it would work but i have a feeling that a ZS-heavy defense would be able to swarm enough people to kill his catching rolls.

Even if the QB had high enough strength to throw constant bullets that didn't give the D enough time to do that?

true, i suppose he could use bullet passing if he doesnt have to worry about any stonehanded track stars on the field.

though i wonder if the height of the ball on a bullet pass would somehow negate the jumping advantage of the WRs

so if the QB knows his receiver is a jumper and is set to bullet passing does he
throw a bullet aimed for 9 feet off the ground, giving the defender a tougher PD roll
or
always aim for the chest, regardless of the WR's jumping ability, letting an aggressive/ballhawking CB get an easy PD just by standing in front of the WR?

depends on if you are talking about pro/world league builds or mid lvl builds IMO.

and usually you guys equate everything to pro/world league builds.

I think that from my experience, which isnt pro/world league, that WRs with balanced builds rock the house. speed is important but other factors can make a star WR. but thats the mid lvls.

That's true. But once passing is fixed the speed WR's will be the best again.
