The defender covers his man, but stays wherever you place him to start the play.

For example, you want to use your MLB to cover the TE if he runs a route, but don't want your MLB to line up across from the TE in case it's a running play. You use this setting and the MLB will remain where ever you put him, but if the TE does run a route, then the MLB will cover from his current spot. Be careful with this as that TE will be uncovered for a sec or two until the MLB catches up with him.

It's also effective if your opponent has a really speedy HB that runs a lot of outside routes. You can put your CBs/OLBs/Ss on cover man w/o move and they'll start outside and move in toward the HB, often forcing the HB to come up earlier and hit the pile of defenders close to the middle of your formation rather than getting the edge.

Or if you know that the HB is likely to run a sweep to the weak side in some particular scenario, you can set up a gang of defenders on the weak side in zones or cover w/o moves to ambush him once he starts that way.
