When I started school my parents were divorced and one of my parents had declared bankruptcy, thus my legal residence was with that parent, which gave me extra qualification for interest free loans. I also qualified for grants for another reason, and I also won a cash scholarship for writing an essay. So I ended up having like 20k in extra grants/loans than my entire tuition cost over my last 3 years of school.
All of my financial aid was obtained through the efforts of a financial aid professional that my family had hired to seek out all advantages and loopholes, kind of like a tax professional can do. My parents paid him something like $500-1,000 and he generated something like 20x++ that value with his research and legwork.
