Everyone agreed Jose Luis Olivares would do anything for his beloved daughter.
One day after the father drowned trying to save 10-year-old Stephanie from drowning in the Rockaways, family and friends remained stunned - but not surprised - by his heroic death.
"He loved that little girl so much," said the dead man's nephew, Javier Hernandez.
"You saw what he did for her, right? That's how much he loved her."
Olivares, 36, became the sixth person this summer to die in the treacherous waters off the Rockaways. His neighbors in Ozone Park weren't surprised that he died trying to save his child.
"He's the best parent you could ask for," said Martha Rosa, 55. "He was always with his daughter."
Olivares was pulled from the waters off Jacob Riis Park by a good Samaritan about 7 p.m. Friday, an hour after lifeguards went off duty, sources said. His daughter was uninjured.
It was unclear how she made it back to shore.
His brother, Javier, said Jose Luis, who also has a 2-year-old son, went in after his daughter and wife of 15 years, Elfega.
"He was a hero. ... He was a good guy. He was a really good brother. We're feeling really bad," said Javier, 33.
"He loved his daughter," he added. "She's devastated."
When rescue teams responded, Olivares was on the shore, unconscious, with his daughter. He was airlifted to Peninsula Hospital where he was pronounced dead, sources said.
The drowning happened after search crews spent the day searching for the body of Heyward (Winky) Patterson, 40, who disappeared Wednesday while swimming with his girlfriend and a relative, cops said.
His body has still not been found.
The choppy tides off the Rockaways proved deadly four other times this year.
