At minimum it costs 50 points to get Defense General to level 8. And, if I did the math correctly, it will cost 56 skill points to get Defensive General to level 10. Couple that with the Natural Leader vet points and that sounds like a huge advantage for the defense. I am building a run stopping, hitter, MLB right now and I plan on getting the Defense General to level 10 either naturally or through AEQ (no luck yet in my 4 shopping sprees).
If it does what it says it does, it should help the defense out quite a bit. The question is when to start raising those skill points into the DG stat? After reaching level 30, the majors go up .19 and minors go up .14 per level (after level 38 they go up .14/.11) Those are the lowest level gains for any position after those levels so is level 30+ the time to raise those special abilities? Or wait until level 38?
If you pump in 56 skill points into special abilities after level 30... that will take you to level 41 to raise it that high (using a bonus token return here or there). If you begin at level 38... that will take you to level 49 before it is to a 10. What is the difference?
Your majors will be .50 better from level gains if you wait until level 38 to begin... your minors will be .30 better for waiting those eight levels. The difference between level 30 and level 49 is about four/five seasons during that time. So, you could play a season or two with DG at 10 or you could play a season or two with your attributes .50 (3 skill points better due to having six majors). So, which way would you like to go?
My MLB, if played out in a similar way as my level 32 safeties, will be at level 32 beginning his 5th season of play. Three boosts and maybe three level gains this year will but them at level 38 after this season... or 30 skill points. Season six will see another three boosts and possibly two level gains... totaling 55 skill points. It will take two seasons of special ability raising so at the beginning of season 7... he could have a 10 in DG... thus giving him another 4-6 seasons of that stat.
If the math is correct, you still gain the level bonuses but bumping up those attributes could cost you in other 3:1 or possibly 4:1 natural level gains compared to having those special abilities. I have seen many MLB's not have a 10 in DG and probably do just fine, but it seems that the trade off of getting to a 10 is essentially not that much... if done later of course.

I don't think the LB defensive general exists as an AEQ. A couple of people claim to know someone who has it, but it's never been proven.
And if you count the +1 from CE its only 50 SPs for 10 in Dgen.

My LB rolled gloves with a +1 Defensive General.
