Is shutdown coverage implemented like the Zone Specialist VA, where it activates situationally during a play? For example, if a player is set to Zone coverage, after the pass is complete he stops playing zone and chases down the ball carrier - does this count as man coverage, and does Shutdown Coverage activate in this case?

only while the player is in man coverage as determined by the sim. When the ball is complete he'd be in pursue ball carrier mode so no it would'nt work after the catch

Ok thanks. Really seems like a useless SA to bury at the end of the FS coverage tree. I wonder if anyone's had success in the Pro Leagues building a man-to-man Shutdown Coverage FS.

It's pointless for the most part because most DCs don't use FSs in man to man that often. Usually playing some kind of zone so it's not worth investing in it much or a FS. I agree it's kinda stupid for FSs to have on their tree. I'd rather have sticky hands or something else FSs can use in zone

It's a pretty solid SA. It's great to be able to use a FS in man to man on blitz packages, that SA gives a lot of DCs confidence to do that.

I am starting to see it that way, too.

yep, blitz the corners and put the FS man-to-man.

EWE blitz the corners. that sucks. I'd rather play a 4-3 on 3 receiver sets and let the F.S. handle the 3 receiver 1 on 1.

Good way to shut down Singleback running and screen passes, I agree

Though I'd rather have a coverage SS lined up on WR2, they can usually break the block better to help support the strongside running game.
You can then use the FS in man-to-man coverage on the HB, playing middlefield.

You then can do pretty much anything you want with your 3 LBs

Interesting. Although I like to roam the S.S. for pitches to the right. Sometimes all those linebackers get caught up on someone. Oh well. Good ideas though.
