With Round 1 in the books let's recap quickly.

DLJ @ Kalamazoo
Prediction: K-Zoo 31-21
Actual: K-Zoo 16-7

Washington @ Detroit
Prediction: Detroit 17-14
Actual: Detroit 25-6

Pensacola @ Philadelphia
Prediction: Philly 34-12
Actual: Philly 42-0

Kentucky @ Chicago
Prediction: Chicago 21-3
Actual: Chicago 44-3

On to Round 2!

(4) Detroit Nasty @ (1) Kalamazoo Coyotes
As the second round kicks off (4/4 in predictions in round 1!), the matchups get much closer and tougher to call. The Coyotes managed to pull out a close victory over the “not-your-typical-8th-seed” Dark Lotus Juggernauts while the Nasty took care of Washington with relative ease. Detroit shouldn’t expect such a cake-walk in the 2nd round though. In week 13, these two Eastern conference power houses faced off and at the end of the day, Detroit just couldn’t keep up with Kalamazoo’s #1 ranked offensive attack. In that game, Ron Dash (2 TD’s, 1 INT, 305.5 yards) thoroughly outplayed Nasty’s Johnny Moxon (1 TD, 5 INT’s, 261.5 yards) while Maurice Jones-Drew (88.5 yards, 1 TD) bested Julius Brown (33 yards, 0 TD’s). The real reason Kalamazoo won though, was the excellent play of their secondary. In the game, Messi had 1 INT, Alexander had 1 INT, Mehta had 1 INT, and CB of the year candidate D’Brickashaw Smeltzer pulled in 2 INT’s. The lone bright spot in Detroit’s offense came from Greg Rice (11 receptions, 121 yards, 1 TD) but his great play was matched by DeAngelo Barksdale (5 receptions, 106.5 yards, 1 TD) and the rest of the Coyote WR corp. Ultimately, Detroit committed too many turnovers to be successful against the #1 ranked team in the league. The question coming into the round 2 playoff game is if Detroit will stick with their passing attack and hope to not commit so many turnovers or if they will rely more on Julius Brown to show what he can do (only 13 carries in their regular season matchup). Detroit’s pancake totals show that they are excellent run blockers but can they manage to pancake a very strong Coyote defensive line led by Goliath Jones (9 tackles, 1 hurry, 6 sacks in Round 1 vs. DLJ)? On the other hand, Detroit’s line has given up a ton of sacks so their pass blocking is questionable, expect Goliath to continue his domination at the line of scrimmage.
Most Important Matchup: Detroit’s O-line vs. Kalamazoo’s D-line
Offense Rank (Points scored): Kalamazoo-1st vs. Detroit-4th
Passing Rank (passing TD’s): Kalamazoo-2nd vs. Detroit-7th
Rushing Rank (rushing TD’s): Kalamazoo-3rd vs. Detroit-5th
Defense Rank (Points allowed): Kalamazoo-3rd vs. Detroit-4th
Passing Defense Rank (Passing TD’s allowed): Kalamazoo-3rd vs. Detroit-6th
Rushing Defense Rank (Rushing TD’s allowed): Kalamazoo-3rd vs. Detroit-5th
Blocking (by pancakes): Kalamazoo-4th vs. Detroit-1st
Blocking (by sacks allowed): Kalamazoo-1st vs. Detroit-10th
Kicking (FG%): Kalamazoo-8th vs. Detroit-7th
Prediction: Kalamazoo wins 19-13

(3) Chicago Mustangs @ (2) Philadelphia Pushovers
If I had to pick a single word to describe the game 1’s that these two teams played it would be “dominance.” The Mustangs and Pushovers won their 1st round games by a combined score of 86-3 (Detroit/Kalamazoo won 41-13). These two top teams look to battle each other in a very low scoring game. Although both teams have equally prolific offenses, these two teams have the #1 and #2 ranked defenses in the conference and many armchair analysts believe that these two teams are the favorites to win it all. During week 14 when these two powerhouses squared off and Chicago won 12-6, Philly QB Chang Wai had one of the worst games of his career as Minister of Defense and the rest of the Chicago defensive line manhandled the Philly offensive line and caused 4 sacks and 3 hurries. The pressure that Chicago put on Wai was evident by his 7 interceptions. On the flip side, Philly’s defensive line was also dominant but their secondary was unable to capitalize on the 11 hurries and 5 sacks as Chicago QB Andrew Vick had a Garrard-like 0 interceptions despite facing constant pressure. The surprise of the game was on the ground. Greg Alstott, who led USA Pro League in rushing yards and rushing TD’s, was absolutely locked down by Philly’s defense (35.5 yards, 1.5 average, 8 TFL, 2 fumbles lost). Keith Goddard managed to average 4 yards per carry but was only given 11 opportunities to carry the ball. The Pushovers need to hand the ball off to Goddard more or at the very least avoid the Mustang’s ballhawk extraordinaire, Nicholas Raine (5 tackles, 4 INT’s, 3 pass deflections). Expect a defensive struggle as both teams look to get at the Quarterback and force mistakes.
Most Important Matchup: Wai and Philly’s Pass Attack vs. Raine and Chicago’s Secondary
Offense Rank: Philly-2nd vs. Chicago-3rd
Passing Rank: Philly-3rd vs. Chicago-1st
Rushing Rank: Philly-2nd vs. Chicago-4th
Defense Rank: Philly-2nd vs. Chicago-1st
Passing Defense Rank: Philly-2nd vs. Chicago-1st
Rushing Defense Rank: Philly-2nd vs. Chicago-1st
Blocking(P): Philly-2nd vs. Chicago-9th
Blocking(S): Philly-3rd vs. Chicago-8th
Kicking: Philly-2nd vs. Chicago-10th
Prediction: Chicago wins 12-9

Both games will be good. I don't think the Nasty will throw 5 Ints this time, but I can hope.

Great writeup! I unfortunately think you're right, the Mustangs have only gotten stronger since last time we faced them, so it might not even be as close as you're saying.

That said, Asheme and I have been working on a gameplan and hopefully can pull out an upset (yes, if we win, I call that an upset here).

I have a feeling the Chi-Phi game might be decided by the kickers.

I have a feeling it's going to be decided by the linemen and which team can even manage to get close enough to kick all that often.

The two best d-lines in the game will make the chi-phi game interesting.

should be a 3-0 type game.

Definately sounds like someone who has players on both D-lines

Hogg is just angry I used big words. Don't worry buddy, next time I'll try to keep everything 4 letter or less so you don't have to get your mommy to read it to you.
