I'm using more M2M but still giving up a lot of yards on passing.

Some plays are M2M/Zone combo then a few are zones.

mix them, maybe try some zone blitz. that pulls the DE back into a zone.

Against a good passing team, all out zone will generally leave too many holes.

Combining zone with M2M is normally the best option to contain a strong passing game.

For example, if a team runs the 5WR "Medium" pass a lot, it's really a short pass right in the middle of the field for 3 to 5 yards. Very easy completion, even with a CB covering him. Sticking your MLB into a short hook zone will help with that play.

Another example, Shotgun-3WR, HB Flood, send your SS or LOLB out to the sideline in an underneath zone, in addition to covering the HB in M2M, and you'll be able to force a throw to a less open WR covered by a CB, with probable help over the top by the FS.

You gotta use both, basically. In some cases, purely M2M is the way to go, but most of the time you need to utilize both zone and M2M.

Thanks...I've been using primary M2M.

My plays don't cover deep route too well, I've specifically made them for rushing, short and mid-range passes.
One of my teams is good at while the other is struggling a bit with pass defense.

Or it could be their builds. I'll probably test some pass def out in scrimmages then.

Zone works well if you have the builds for it:

* Front four that can generate pressure without blitzers
* Good vision/agility all around the defense
* Enough defenders with Jackhammer to get the PD quantity up to functional levels
* Not many CBs with high SDC

You're covering with 7, offense has 5, you've got 2 levels of coverage (under/flat, deep). Get an extra defender at each level compared to what you expect the offense to do. This ain't rocket science. If you have an extra defender at each level, you'll probably break up the pass. If you're short a defender at a level, you'll get burned pretty trivially (cover 2 against a play with 3 deep routes, for example). If you have an even matchup at a given level (3 deep vs. 3 deep routes) the play will go there, and you're relying on your guys to win one-on-one battles. However, if you assume your opponent is competent, one-on-one battles are not a desirable outcome--especially in the deep passing game.

When you're building man/zone hybrids, there's no real trick to it--you account for the offense's receivers (all 5 eligibles) with 5 guys, rush 3 or 4, and have 2 or 3 guys left over to double-cover based on specific zone assignments. This holds for cover 2 man under, cover 1 robber, and basically every other man/zone hybrid out there. Again, not rocket science.
