I was surprised too. Took me all of one pre-season game to find that zone defense flaw.
As for testing - I run base AI with the same settings between test runs so that the results won't be too skewed by various play calling differences. It's not perfect, I know, but it's about the best I can do to provide accurate/consistent data.
