If your defense is a 4-2 Cover 2, and you are facing a 3 WR 1 TE 1 HB set, and you set coverage to be man to man underneath

Does the LOLB cover the TE and the MLB cover the HB? Logically, you'd think it would be that way, but looking at game replays, I'm not so sure.

Yes they should as long as they don't blitz, but MLB has to be fast enough to jump on HB route too.

Also, that's a suitable defense for the shotgun-3 set, but against most teams, not really a good call against the singleback set.

The two formations use the exact same personnel.

Against Shotgun, use 3-1-7 Cover 1 Man Long Coverage with a Weakside MLB blitz.

3-3-5 or 4-2-6 works ok against Singleback 3 WR, but without good smart CBs, the outside is a bit open be it outside runs or the dreaded screen pass.
