Or, how does it impact coverage?

I think it is how far the CB's (or anyone in man 2 man) line up away from their man.....short would be right on the line, and the longer the distance, the more space they have..

In theory more space = less chance to get burned, but a higher chance to let a quick pass of a couple/few yards be completed.

But glb != theory

I don't think that is right mantis7.

It is zone and man for one. It is how far back the players drop in to coverage on zone, and I believe how far back the man coverage guy goes before turning from a back peddle.

If you are referring to Defense AI and not individual tactics, this is what I believe it to be. Of course, I could be wrong.

Coverage Distance in the defense AI is how far back the safeties (or just the FS in cover 1) play.

Play Focus in the defense AI sets how far back from the line the LBs (or SS in cover 1) play. Run brings them really close to the line, balanced a little further back, and Pass the furthest back. It does not do anything else though, such as override player tactics for run vs. pass focus, which is a fairly common misconception.
