OK. Trying to figure out the best way to staff ST. I have a couple of options. Some I've tried, some I have not,

1. All CPU ST. Tried this last offseason. Got highest level DT's and put them all on ST. We had one of the worst ST's in the league last season.

2. Recruit really, really low level guys as ST only. Problem now is I think with all the new teams, that all these low level folks have places to go where they can start. Plus, I don't know if a lvl 13 DT can tackle a lvl 45 HB returner.

3. Put all backups on ST. This kinda sucks for the backups, as they burn all their energy on ST. Also, impacts quality of play late in game as starters are forced to play more. May have team allocate points to stamina, but still sucks.

So, how do you go for ST? What has worked? what has not?

Look into the distance runner VA if you're serious about conserving energy.

Porblem with that is then I'm sacrificing 'real' VA's for the sake of ST.

Depends on how you want to think about it. the point of "real" VAs is to make your guys play better, right? Have you checked what sort of energy your special teamers are finishing with? If it's less than 60 then they are playing below their optimum level at the end of the game when plays are generally more important. If you have 11 players who are consistently playing with low energy you're probably giving up a lot more than +15% in one single attribute.

I used a mixture of CPU's and backups.

If you tried playing all CPU DTs on special teams then yeah, I'd expect that to be pretty terrible. DTs are basically the last defensive position you want on your coverage teams.

Be careful getting weak players on ST if you face someone with a power back returning kicks.

I would personally get LB's to do it if they are fast. then FS and SS also

Damn why didn't I think of that. There's so many lvl 40's looking to be the backup/ST guys. (rolls eyes). Seriously, though, since I can't find lvl 40's willing to be backups in large numbers, the main reason I wouldn't implement it with lower level guys is a lower level LB/DE would do a lot more damage on Defense, than my CPUs did on ST.

In response to the DT's being bad, I can see that. Of the CPU positions, what is the best for coverage and for returns, in your opninion?

I think I like the idea suggested of going with a mix of CPU/Real guys.

recruit better and get loyal players who care more about winning than snaps?

or make a bunch of your own players and have them play back-up?

I don't think there's anyone that "doesn't care about snaps". It's no fun to invest time in a player and only have him get 20 plays a game w/ half of them on ST.

If it comes down to it, get a couple (only a couple) CPU players.

with higher levels only needing 20 snaps for max XP, some players are willing to be predominately ST if you can get them 20 real plays.
