Anyone have any idea what this looks like? My opponent sets his best WR as his #3 WR on his depth chart to create a mismatch in 5 Wide. On this particular play (the only one with 5 Wide Shotgun in the Medium WR), the #3 WR slides behind the #1 WR and does a streak up the left hand side. The owner targets this WR 90% of the time.

Two questions - first, I basically want to double cover the #3 WR going deep. Will this coverage accomplish that for me? And secondly, will my MLB go into coverage against either his #4 or #5 WR?

Or would it be better to run underneath zone from this defense if I need to cover the middle?

Help!! Game starts in 1 hour!!

I think the cover 4 will have the ss, FS and 2 CB's in deep zones, leaving 3 CB's on WR's and 1 MLB on a WR, and 1 WR uncovered at the line until he goes deeper....I cant say which, because I dont use that scheme and am too lazy to look tho...

Personally I would not use 317 cover 4 unless it was some kind of crazy situation like barely any time left, and you are up by a couple scores....

I am sorry I do not have a link to any examples but good luck with your game

also from the 317 you should consider blitzing the #5 and / or #3 CB, this will put alot of pressure on him...I have done this from the 317 with success...(although the cover 0)

Here is an idea for you

3-1-7 cover 0, blitz cb 5 and 3

its only versus 3 wr so here is one versus 5wr

Notice if you did not blitz CB3, you would double cover wr3 i think...

good luck man

that puts an MLB on wr3, 1-1 for about 20 yards ......somehow i do not think that is what he wants to do

I would use 3-1-7 Cover 2, Man under

That puts a CB on each WR, with safeties playing two-deep, MLB picks up the guy over the middle

If your FS has decent Speed & Vision he should help with the guy streaking up the sideline

Cover 4 is the equivalent of running a prevent defense. Think about this... you are going to drop your #1 and #2 CBs back about 15-20 yards along with the FS and SS. Underneath you'll be left with your #3, #4, and #5 CB's along with the MLB (assuming a 3-1-7 since that was what was discussed in the OP).

Are you planning to run man coverage with 3 CB's and an MLB against 5 WR's? Does that sound like something you'd need to test? Sometimes you can tell a playcall sucks without the need to prove it by letting the dots run around.

You have to consider that the SG 5WR formation has more than one potential play call and the best you can do as a defense is to match the formation (with down/distance/score filters obviously). Trying to develop a scheme to stop 1 particular pass route on 1 particular play is counterproductive if you leave 1 or more other receivers wide open in the process.
