I'm looking for some general input on builds for LB's in the 3-4 D, as I've never been part of one til now. My initial guess for a rough mid/longer term build (base stats w/o equip)is something like:

OLB 68/61/61/48/48 in speed/agility/vision/strength/tackling respectively

ILB 61/61/61/61/61 in speed/agility/vision/strength/tackling respectively

THANKS in advance for any 3-4 guru's who can help me better understand what longer term goals I should be shooting for with these positions....

I don't see a huge need for any linebacker to every have 61 strength to be honest but I do agree 3-4 ILBs need pretty good tackling because if they miss it can be hard for somebody else to be there to clean up.

You'd be surprised how much high strength cuts down on missed tackles...

You're ILB example has one more cap than your OLB example does. Your ILB has 10 caps so I'll use that as a base to give my 10 cap 3-4 linebacker projection examples and I will not back them up with any reasons or specific information. How's that?

LOLB - 68 speed, 68 agility, 61 tackling, 48 strength, 48 vision. - Equipment split between speed and agility

LILB - 61 speed, 61 agility, 61 tackling, 61 strength, 61 vision. - Equipment in Strength and tackling

RILB - 61 speed, 61 agility, 61 tackling, 61 strength, 61 vision. - Equipment in Speed and vision

ROLB - 72 speed, 61 agility, 48 tackling, 48 strength, 61 vision. - Equipment in Speed

i think aanidar's pretty accurate with a general design. 3-4's are built differently however so one coach may want 4 strength/vision based linebackers to cover small zones and hold up blockers, while another might want 4 speed/agility based linebackers who can all fly to the ball very quickly, or like aanidar's post with linebackers focused to a specific position.

Building on what you're saying scoot... all these "how should x be built" questions are fairly inaccurately answered by anyone except the coordinator using them. There really isn't any one position (maybe NT?) that can't make a specific theme better by catering to it's needs. To do that though, you need to talk to your coordinator and find out what he needs to use you for and how you can do that most effectively. The above examples are what I'd like in a 3-4 core of linebackers if I was Dcoordinating.

The downside to this, of course, is that players aren't always on teams for long and once you build to a specific style you aredown to one of two options: either you find the same type of system and get plugged into it, or you play a different role at a diminished capacity of effectiveness.
