No. Here's a decent gameplan:
1) Train: kck/vis. Hold all SPs until you can assign them all at once to get kck to 68 (this is slowbuilding kicking to cap3)
2) Train: vis/con. Hold all SPs until you can assign them all at once to get con to 61 (slowbuilding con to cap2)
3) Train: vis/con. Hold all SPs until you can assign them all at once to get vis to 61 (slowbuilding vis to cap2)
4) Train: str/jmp or str/kck. Hold all SPs until you can assign them all at once to get str to cap1 (slowbuilding str to cap1)
5) PROFIT! From here just train spd/sta and start putting your SPs into the tree.

Depending on how quickly you're leveling (and where your kicking starts) you should not hold you SP until you can get kicking to 68.
Assuming a kicker with 21/21 kick/con & intense training kick/Vis:

At 100% max game XP a kicker should cap kicking ASAP
At 75% max game XP, same.
At 50% Max game XP, same.

Kicking simply gets way too much from leveling and players level too fast to make holding SP worthwhile. You should almost never hold SP when the training you're otherwise getting is yielding less SP than the level bonus provides.

I haven't bothered to run numbers below 50%, but likely around 25% it starts to be beneficial to train longer. You can run the numbers yourself with the virtual player builder.

i definitely think you should hold to 61, because you can get to 61 real fast (lvl 7/8) ... but i can understand not going to 68.

I ran a couple of quick sims on the VPB:

1. Kicker rolled a near ideal 23/17 in kick/punt, trained kick/punt while waiting for points to cap kicking, kicker got 100% max game XP (unlikely, unless on a slowbuild team)

(A) Result when capping ASAP: Single capped kicking able to single cap kicking at level 3, double capped at level 6 with 0 SP left over
(B) Result when training until can double cap: Had enough points to double cap at level 7, with 3 SP left over.

2. Same as above with 50% max game XP (more realistic XP)

(A) Result when capping ASAP: Single capped kicking able to single cap kicking at level 3, double capped at level 6 with 0 SP left over + 7 bonus tokens
(B) Result when training until can double cap: Had enough points to double cap at level 6, with 0 SP left over + 3 bonus tokens.

So, even at 50% Max game XP you're still better off capping ASAP. Now if your game xp is well below 50% which very well can happen on a D league team, it's likely you're better off training longer. But to be sure you've got to do estimates and run the numbers. If you don't want to run the numbers my suggestion is to stick with ASAP capping. Other factors that can play into it is a worse roll, i.e. say a 18 kick 23 con or something like that.

on that note...during these builds, would you trade in BTs for SP?

Hell. No. Save your BTs among like 3 or 4 pieces of useless AEQ (I call them "piggy bank AEQ"). Then when you're L24 start shopping for AEQ, preferably 2 pieces, and put your BTs there.
