I don't know if anyone knows for sure. The common theory is that it helps some with kicking mechanics.

It helps them after the game so they can be the first one out of the locker room. That way they can get first dibs on the skanky chics who are hanging outside wanting to meet the players.

The most likely way it helps isn't in the direct programming of how punting works (kicking mechanics) but rather in Borts addition a few seasons ago: He made it so you need specific "supporting attributes" to be "high enough" to make your main attribute work "at its full potential." What this means numerically, nobody knows, he was very very vague. The point was to discourage and penalize one-sided builds.
However a key example would be like..
20 agility, 100 speed - might actually perform at 20 agility, 40 speed, if there is a 2:1 cutoff Bort implemented. So adding 10 agility also "adds" 20 speed to your performance now.
He never gave any strict rules about how it would work, but he gave many examples. Punting/kicking wasn't one specifically, but it is plausible that because speed agility and jumping are all minors, they aren't part of a ceiling formula that affects what punting value the sim actually uses for your build.

I've seen results with jumping (longer hangtime)
I believe agility may help distance, very very slightly. i.e. mechanics...
I still do not believe speed helps one bit except in helping to go tackle to returner.
