Good, solid base, now you have to figure out where your defense needs to go with him.

For starters I'd recommend raising strength to at least 30 and confidence to at least 30, but you could opt to just train those up. Stamina > 40 is also good but I think I just let that naturally rise to 40 before sticking 5 more in it, so that can definitely wait.

What's he been doing or not doing that you don't like? Need to know the problem before we can offer a solution.

Big numbers for a free safety are a sign of a bad secondary. Your player is the last line of defense, if you're getting a lot of tackles it means your corner backs are getting beat. I had 27 tackles this past season and most of them were from my guy coming up and making plays in run defense. If you wanted a lot of stats you'd be better suited to creating a linebacker or corner back than a FS.

I had 73 tackles and like 60 of them were against RBs. It was a defensively painful season for my team >_< All the worse because I missed like 10 other tackles (that don't show up on any stat) that turned into big touchdown plays.

What a painful position. Every game feels more like "what did I do wrong this time?" more than "what did I accomplish?"

same here southlight

the good news is, at least he is converting on over 80% of his chances in a league that is 20+ his level.

I'm really sick of seeing this said here over and over again. It's not true.

It is! IF the CBs are build right, a FS rarely makes any tackle on the WRs (for the CBs do themselfes). IF the LBs are build right, a FS rarely makes any tackle on the RBs. That leaves blitzing...

Just try to find examples where a FS makes the play without someone screwing up.

You're right, if the builds are right there won't ever be a play where someone screws up. With the right build, the perfect play is made every time.

My FS:

The last two seasons were in Africa AAA and Pro. We were one of the best teams with a top 3 defense both years and somehow I made plays.

What was the style of defense you played in? Was your FS sent on the blitz often or were most of your tackles made in the secondary? Unfortunately since you're a FA I can't look at film of any of your past games, but I'd be interested to see where exactly your numbers came from. In my experience there are quite a few games where my FS doesn't have a single stat, not because he is getting beat or missing tackles, but because the ball simply isn't thrown anywhere near him. The only time I make plays are when I'm playing up in run support or blitzing, in the rare instance when one of our CBs gets beat, or when they're playing 5 wide and I'm one on one with a WR. If you design a FS to be the last line of defense it is a good sign for your defense if you aren't making plays and you're still winning games.

You can just click on game log and see the games. Anyways, I wasn't blitzing hardly at all, I can only remember a couple of instances. I was mostly back in zone, but I honestly don't know what style of defense we played.

Watch your player play and figure out what you want your player to improve.

If you are concerned about missing tackles, then you raise strength and tackling.

If you are concerned about your player not being fast enough then you raise speed.

If you are concerned about your player not being able to turn quickly enough/slowing down while turning then raise agility.

If your player just doesn't seem to be in the right place, raise vision.

If you want more deflections and interceptions any of the the above mentioned skills might help along with jumping and catching.

FS for the Boston Nighthawks had relatively putrid stats this season, and I think they ran mostly a Cover 1/Cover 2 system. People simply did not throw it his way and the linebackers/SS smothered things in the middle.

FS for the Monmouth Evil Monkeys, on the other hand, had some flashy numbers, but I think they ran more Man with their FS, and that definitely increased the chances he got at the ball coming toward him.
