Let's say a team rushes up the middle a lot in the I-formation, but also passes to the TE a lot as well.
Is there a good defense to stop this play & hold the rushing game?

[ Strong 'I' - HB Slam ]

I use "8 In The Box" a lot. Its a 4-3/Cover 1 [Run Stack] where the MLB and SS Blitz. I use this in a lot of 2-wide sets, shifting and blitzing from different spots. Its a highly versatile D scheme. Note: Sometimes I do not blitz anyone and simply call it "Spy In The Box."

Before you install this as your base scheme, though, know that I research the other team and really only employ it against running teams. Throwing 8 in the box begs the other team to throw. If they do, its usually "good night, Irene."

In order to adapt this to a team that throws to the TE, simply blitz the MLB only and let the SS double-cover the TE [LOLB is default coverage]. You will now rush 5 and allow your Linemen to be 1-on-1 [MLB occupying the RG]. The WR's will be 1-on-1 with your CB's and the TE is wrapped-up with the LOLB/SS. If the RB goes out, the ROLB will cover him, else fall into coverage on WR1.

As I said, if your CB's are suspect, you get crushed if the QB has time to throw.

My CBs aren't the greatest. Also, they run it out of this formation more than they pass. However, they get HUGE yards when they do pass here.

If your cbs arent the best it might be good to run that scheme and not blitz, and set underneath coverage to man. Helps if you have fast lbs.
