Not too concerned about immediate success, just want to build a long-term FS.

Would taking Speed to a natural 74 be too much of a sacrifice (to agility/vision)?

Will that high of speed ever be needed?

yes! its a great plan if you can deal with your guy not being real good for a full 2 seasons. i took my SS up to 68 before i got agility and vision up. but now i'm considering taking speed up to 74 when i boost at the end of the season.
so yea i'd consider doing it if you have the heart for it, but you'll definitely want it that high at some point

That would take a lot of patience. A safety can use a lot of different skills, so it can be hard to justify.

Basically you would be spending about 26 skill points (I think) to raise your speed 6 more than where many others would stop. Is getting a less than 10% advantage in speed at the expense of 26 skill points, 5 levels of assignable points, really worth that? I don't think it is.

Remember that once you pass around level 28, after your third full season usually, you will only be leveling up 5 or 6 times a season including boosts. In some sense you will be playing catch up with your other skills if you spend points like this.

The only positions I think this would be worthwhile on would be center and guard. These players get the most out of strength and blocking and don't have many more usable skills compared to other positions. Even a NT has more usable skills to spread points on.

I'd say no. Like FatLoad said, there's too many other places where those points will be more useful. Personally I'm going to try triple capping it quickly and just let natural leveling pay off. Investing in it early is just much more efficient than 5 capping it later. 5 jumping or stamina or two point five more agility/vision or a couple more in superior vision just seems more useful than one more single point in speed. Pretty underwhelming level if you ask me.

Honestly I'd think 5 more stamina will make you faster overall than one more speed.

I'd agree with no. I know it's a speed game, but there's a reason safeties play 10 yards off the LOS...to give them a head start. Safeties don't need to be as fast as CBs (well, maybe a FS should be close...if you buy into the FS=big CB and SS=little LB).

However, you will HAVE to get speed, agility, and vision all to the second cap, which requires a lot of points. Also figure that tackling needs to be capped, strength should probably be close (especially if you're a special teamer) to capped, stamina needs to be high, and jumping and confidence need to be to 30. That's a lot of reqs (as compared to other positions).

I'd go to 68 and stop. But that's just me.

you can get away with it. You wouldn't be balanced until level 35 or so. But once you get balanced you would be pretty damn good. The level gains would be nice as well once it's at the 5:1 cap.
