not hard:

SS: Run support (Speed, Agility, Vision, Tackling, Strength, Catching, Jumping)
FS: Pass Coverage (Speed, Agility, Vision, Catching, Jumping, Tackling, Strength)

Basically, one hits hard and is a bit bigger, almost and extra LB, and the other is an extra DB, who covers and stuff.

SS, stat machine, especially tackles. FS unsung hero of the D, on a good D he'll do practically nothing to gain any glory but the few plays they are responsible for are generally big ones.

FS is the ultimate masochist's position.

You'll hardly get any "good" stats, unless your team really sucks.

You cover up for other peoples' mistakes, so their mistakes don't look particularly big.

But when you screw up, it's usually a nice wonderful touchdown.

while a FS shouldn't typically compile alot of tackles, it is possible for a FS to put up numbers on a good team.
my FS is the 2nd leading tackler on a 12-3 team with good defense with very fast LBs.

a good FS will make alot of plays in the running game, too.
here's a sampling of some plays in a 9 tackle game (and victory over one of the best teams in the league)

or here's one of my personal favorites making a big 4ht down stop (different game)

a good FS should make an impact in the running game, even on a good team. whether it's crossing the field to shut down a pitch, saving an aggressive LB after a missed tackle, holding potential big gains to modest gains, or making an outright stop, there are many plays for FS to make even on a good defense.

not saying a FS should be a team's leading tackler, but they shouldn't be invisible either. (not to mention all the passes they need to be defelecting)

The better you get the better opportunity to pick up stats. IMO

However, he is right. If you are looking for stats through out your career, stay away from FS or NT.
