Has anyone experimented with high jumping ability and diving tackle. I'm a RDE with some points already in the Containment tree. I'm considering starting to pour points into jump and diving tackle. My thinking is that I don't need to penitrate as far if I can increase my tackle radius.

works, but it's something you don't need to do until all your other attributes are high enough to get sacks.

As has been noted before...

For a Pass Rusher

1) Get by the blocker
2) get to the QB in time to make the sack

If you are accomplishing #1 on a regular basis but failing on #2, then jumping/diving tackle is perhaps a viable option for improving performance.

It will not help you much with #1 however (I say "much" because you can occasionally seem to get sacks "through" the blocker...not sure what goes into that).

RDE, containment. Not interested in being Flashy and a pass rusher. I intend to stop the run. If I can shut down the right side of the line. Mission accomplished.

I want to be a run stopper. that's my goal. I'm thinking that Jump + diving tackle will increase by effective range for tackles. Seems to be working well already and I've got a low jump.

You do know that pretty much all running plays go up the middle/to the left don't you?

Having a run stoping RDE is kinda useless. Regardless, building a "run stopping" de in general is waste because even if they are built to stop the run they have very little success.

I hope my opponents continue to think this

I couldn't disagree more...a good run stopping DE perfomrs his role in two ways: He can break away from single blocks to contain the pitch/sweep, and he can absorb a double (and often triple) team block so that LBs and SS are free to make the tackle.

If you limit your search to some of the best teams out there, you find a surprising number of run stopping DEs (much higher than the league average). If you loook at teams that can really crush the run, you find even more.

I think that having competent run-stoppers at RDE will be more and more important for the future.

That being said...I am not sure that the containment tree offers great value in building a run-stopper...which may be more to AN's point.

The best "run stopping" DEs I have played against were also super high agility pass rushers.

I thought that LDEs are the run stoppers and RDEs are the better pass rushers?

That idea was more true when you couldn't decide which way you want to run the ball.

I agree. Pass rushers can get off a block and are quick and agile as hell. This alone makes them good run stoppers. Maybe a power back runs through you a couple of times a game but you bring to the team both sacks/hurries and being able to stop the run.

Am I the only one who thinks hurries are overrated. Sacks obviously help, and I understand that Hurries are almost sacks, but Hurries just don't seem to have the negative effect on a QB that they should.

and your right he's a LDE, not a Right. Had been working on an offense all day. Didn't switch my mind to D.
