eh? like say LB1 has 8 tackles, and LB2 has 4 tackles and 4 PDs. would you say that LB1 or LB2 had a better outing? I would think that LB2, since a PD keeps the ball at the line of scrimmage, whereas a tackle means that the ball has advanced.

Its similar...but you'd have to look deeper in. If LB1 had a few TFLs, those are better than PDs. Additionally, if those PDs were 12 yards down field, those are better than stopping the RB on a 2 yard scamper.

yea you can't go by stats. a stop for 2 yards on 3rd and 3 is huge. a deflection when the pass is completed is meaningless. you have to watch the plays.

It's gameplan/play based. For example, one player might be blitzing and making tackles the other's job is to be covering the TE who is catching the ball half the time.
Also PDs can still be completed, yet they still count (?)...

Id rather have 4 PDs and 4 tackles than 8t ackles b/c on a tackle the ballcarrier may have gained yards but on a PD you've completely stopped the offense and they wasted a down.

Again, may. Like my post said, if those were for losses, you're better off than PDs. It all depends on the play itself. Numbers say nothing.

well the odds of a tackle being for a loss are kind of slim, whereas a PD is ALWAYS a no gain (unless it's deflected into a receiver's hands)

I think the chances of a PD going for nothing are much better than a tackle going for nothing, or for negative yardage.

thoughts?

On the basic:
Tackle = Positive play
PD = Positive play

You really need more info than just that to decide who had a better outing...
3rd or 4th down play for a drive stop?
Downfield or for negative yardage?
Out of position play from across the field?
Zone, man, or blitz play with extra coverage? (Positioning)
Big plays given up?
etc...
