I'm creating a defensive AI from scrath. I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do. I'm just not sure if I'm doing it right. Here is my plan.

1)Base defense that handles all downs and the entire field.
2)3rd Down defense for entire field
4)Redzone defense and Goal Line
5)Defense for when the other team is backed up at their own goal.
6)3rd down D with field postion
7)Defenses based on the offenses formation, field postion, and down.
8)anything else that catches my fancy.

Is that a good way to start?

Really, doesn't number 7 summarize all of that?

Or, if you don't mean every down/distance/formation possibility (which would take forever), then yes, that is a good way to start.

You then watch games, find out what is working, and where you need to make additions.

I don't mean every possability just situations that my base D would be mismatched. Should have been a little mre clear. Thanks

Yea, I usually run a base defense for most situations, then have specifics for shotgun and 3 wr for anywhere on the field.

I see what you're saying now. I'm a big fan of keeping it simple. Especially since you can't really adapt to what the D is giving you during the game. I just have some special situation inputs and a base defense with a couple of outputs and give it a go.

That also makes it easier to game plan against specific opponents. I used to be in the super-huge-playbook-with-every-scenario-covered camp, but now that the offense has control, there's no need.

Yeah after Bleeds took a look at my Offensive Playbook he simplified his Defensive Playbook to let it be more in the dots hands vice trying to account for everything that my offense can do.

Bleeds is my DC by the way and a good one.

I basically just go by your #7. I go by down (1/2, or 3/4) X distance (short, medium, long for 1st down) X each formation. This does add up to a good number of imputs, and I do tend to have the same base D for many of combinations, but getting the skeleton of inputs down then allows me to adjust easier for each opponenant. I generally don't plan based on field position though, just the goal line.


I'd also create a 2 minute D at the end of the 2nd quarter, and a D for a 2 possession game where you are winning late in the 4th, and a D for losing late in the 4th.

Ok I see what your saying. Don't all those inputs get confusing though?

Their honsetly won't be much based on field position, but there are a few circumstance I can think of that I might employ it.

Never even considered a 2 minute D. Thanks we'll need that.

I do the same thing MikeHomie does.
Once you get the inputs entered it is easy to maintain the rest of the season.
It makes it easy to change your scheme from game to game.
Also, although it is more inputs, it is simpler to keep track of than the approach you described (I started out doing that) as everything is setup by formation and it is quicker to make changes for each game.

In terms of field position, you probably want to play less Cover2/1 close to your goal line. That is typically the field position input you want to setup.
