I have a Agility higher than speed, 81 to 62, and have 5 in first step, 5 in change direction. He does pretty well.

A rule of thumb I had stumbled on was if you had speed>agility, it makes more sense to put (more) points into Quick Cut. If agility>speed, First Step then has a pretty good value. Can't vouch from personal experience as to its success though.

quick cut?
[/QUOT

quick cut is the same as change direction

First Step has been a great SA for quite a while. This season, however, Shed Block seems to have reclaimed its spot as the #1 DE SA. FS is less effective due to not being able to "sprint around" the OT consistently this season.

Actually, I know of 1 DE with 11 in first step that has about 20 sacks in the first game + scrimmage, all against reasonable quality OTs. Seems to be working for him. His agility and speed are decent but not astronomical by any means.

Is the change direction SA worth investing in? Seems like the sacks this season are DEs going strait up field and then taking a 90 degree turn strait to the QB. My DE did it once in a scrimmage but just that once.

Watching replays this season, DE w/ higher First Step and AGI plunges straight into the OT, while the slower DE gets a better angle.

I have found that to be untrue.

Just put 7 ranks into first step and these were some clips from the game we just had this morning:

I didnt score a sack but got consistent pressure. Speed/agi was a 70/80 ratio. Tweaked it a bit to get speed a touch higher. Probably going to look at working up CoD and Shed Block next.

TV is still #1 by far.

I think it is still the case that a variety of builds are effective. Balanced builds seem to be doing fine.

However, as AnTiNiNjA has noted elsewhere...things are a little more black and white this season. It seems you either face absolute shutdown, or you go crazy for double digit sacks.

I am starting to think the "improvements" were a step backwards for both sides of the ball.

Bort nerfed the nerf

Yeah, it feels like his unnerfing of the nerf made DEs stronger than before with the exception being that people can keep in extra blockers.

Are you saying that first step was the best SA before this season and shed block is now?

No, I'm just saying it doesn't seem to be AS effective now as it was in past seasons. IMO, for pretty much every DE, SB is the most useful SA this season (very few are built like Julius Dee or David Amazing, with enough speed to really blow past the OT). TV is #1a, but I still think SB gives you the most bang for your buck especially due to the league restructuring and most leagues being more competitive.
