Forum > Position Talk > LB Club > OLB Blitz - How do you get more success, how do they stop you?

I have a young LB int he works and have the vision of having some impact of blitzing off the corners in addition to coverage and run help.

What I was wondering is how to make the most of this aspect of the position. As far as the player itself, I am figuring on big speed and agility, with vision coming up to the soft cap next, but what I am not sure on is how to see it work the best with gameplanning.

Most times i see this work is seems like it is when the offense goes with 3 WR and the defense goes with 3 d-linemen, which frees up one of the LBs to blitz, but I wasn't sure if this was just a small sample size, or if there are other situations where it would be more successful.

Also, I am wondering what the most common things that will stop the LB blitz. Do HBs with higher vision see the blitz coming and break off a pass route to pick it up? Do guards with higher speed manage to pull fast enough to pick it up? Are there just some offensive schemes where it flat out isn't going to work if both teams are mostly equal?

Thanks.

you need vision capped but that's not what gets you around the edge. that's pure speed and agility. keeping extra blockers in and short passes stop the blitz. a blitz on a slow developing play should net a sack.

you don't need vision capped, it's a fallacy. You need an aggressive DC who understands how the oline blitz pickups work and you need speed to hit the hole and get the QB. Watch this guy and try to become like him. He does not have vision close to soft capped.

And yes, faster, more agile G's will pick up the blitz, but a LOLB or SS blitz will keep the RG on that side of the field opening things up for the ROLB. You better have good CBs to run that type of defense though...you have been warned.

it also helps to be lined up next to another top pass rusher who engages the OLineman.

errr you need vision capped if you want to be a decent linebacker. not to get sacks though.

He asked about the OLB blitz and how to get more success. The guy I posted played ROLB and had over 130 tackles and 47 sacks. He's below 35 vision. You don't need vision near capped to be a superstar linebacker. Not sure why you would want to settle for being decent

That isn't to say that good LBs DON'T have vision capped. Some do. There are many ways to build a successful LB though and a lot depends on what position you play and how the DC uses the LBs.

as I said, it helps if the DC understands how the blitz pickups work. for whatever reason the RG is responsible for that blitz pickup and he gets picked off by his own players.

If they re-do the pathing that blitz won't work like that next year, but I'm sure there will be new ways to create pressure.
