In American Football, Most of the time it is the job of the defensive end to keep outside contain, which means that no one should get to their outside; they must keep everything to the inside. The defensive ends are fast for players of their size, often the fastest and smallest players on the defensive line. They must be able to shed blockers to get to the ball. Defensive ends are also often used to cover the outside area of the line of scrimmage, to tackle ball carriers running to the far right or left side, and to defend against screen passes. Defensive ends are usually the only players on the line who are ever used to cover offensive players running receiving routes, ones that are very close to the line of scrimmage, when the called play is for a short yardage gain, whose only intent is get a first down or a quick score over the goal line.

The Strength DE

The strength DE is a battler in the trenches, he doesn’t rack to many stats but is and usually is a real team player. They are not usually known to get to many sacks, but they can really help the defensive in stopping the run. A strong DE can and is able to be relied upon to stop the run effectively this means there is a lesser amount of LB’s in need of blitzing, leaving them downfield to cover any receivers or even play as a QB spy. A stronger DE can also force back 1 or 2 blockers, causing a lack of holes for the HB to head through, that is how they can be effective in stopping the run.

Build Guide http://goallineblitz.com/game/forum_thread.pl?thread_id=536996

Major Attributes
Strength, Tackling, Vision...

Strength – Strength for a DE of this sort of build is obviously the most important attribute, it is used to force the O-Lineman back, and cut the holes the HB has to run into. With high strength he can then also take up usually more than 1 blocker for a heavy LB blitz which leaves the linebackers to come through pretty much untouched.

Tackling – Tackling, it is very simple as to why you may need it as a DE, it makes you more effective and gives you a higher chance at bringing the ball carrier down, whether it be the HB or the QB it will really help your game. Also tackling increases the radius in which you can tackle, so if you have 3 or 4 strong run stuffing defensive lineman it will be very hard to run the ball in any direction.

Vision – Vision is the least important major attribute, but it can help your game in a few areas, vision is needed as it will give you the tactical knowledge of the game...For example, for a HB, vision will help you spot the holes and cutback lanes...So for a DE this could be used in the same situation except you are trying to bring down the HB. It will also help you spot gaps in between O-Lineman and areas to exploit in order to get to the ball carrier.

Minor Attributes.
Speed, Agility...

Speed – Speed is needed as a strength DE but only as a minor attribute, it will help you simply chase down a player or ball carrier and it will also help you get off the line at a quicker pace, combined with agility you will get off the line at a very good rate.

Agility – Agility as a DE is a important attribute, but only for an evasive DE, it can really only be used for acceleration, as in recent seasons it has become a part of acceleration. And all it will really help you do is reach your maximum speed.

Strength DE, SA’s...

Wall - This player is very hard to push backward when run blocking. The Wall skill gives him a bonus to standing his ground when blockers try to push him back. This skill can help keep holes from opening up in the line, making rushing difficult. Additional Levels: Increases the bonus to avoiding being pushed back.
Strong Base - This player has a powerful lower body, and knows how to use it well. The Strong Base skill gives him a bonus to pushing a blocker out of the way. This skill works best when used by players with high strength. Additional Levels: Increases the chance of the skill working, and increases the bonus to pushing the blocker away.

Diving Tackle – This can be useful as your DE not being very quick may not be able to keep up with other quicker runners, therefore a diving tackle will enable them to make this tackle.

Strength Defensive End Build Summary

So for an effective strength defensive end, you need very high strength. This along with the wall SA and Strong base, makes a very effective run container. To get even better results as a run stuffer, pump up your tackling and vision to the soft caps, and reap the rewards. You may not get the best stats, but you will be your DC’s favourite player.

Balanced

The balanced DE is the best of both worlds, it is a real mix between speed and agility and a strong powerhouse DE, and you need to be constantly thinking about all attributes possible and need to be a guy who knows what he’s doing. Building a balanced DE is not for the faint hearted! He should and hopefully can be a tough strong powerhouse whilst at the same time being an evasive pass rusher able to bring a QB down...

Build Guide
Major Attributes...
Speed, Agility, Strength

Speed – This is obviously one of the most important attributes for a balanced DE, this combined with agility and strength should give you the oppoutunitie to rack some stats whilst being a team player. Speed will enable you to, chase down the ball carrier, help you get round the lineman and to the QB and it can in some cases help you get off the line much quicker.

Agility - Agility as a DE is a important attribute, it can really only be used for acceleration, as in recent seasons it has become a part of acceleration. And all it will really help you do is reach your maximum speed, but it can be a real help when trying to beat your man.

Strength – Strength as a balanced DE is a very good attribute to have, as coming up against strong blockers you will need to have some strength in order to compete against run or pass blocking. Against run blocking it is useful to force the opposition into closing the gaps and move there O-Line backwards, In pass blocking it is useful, as if up against a pass blocker, you can use strength to push past him and through to the QB.

Minor attributes...
Vision, Tackling...

Vision - Vision is the least important major attribute, but it can help your game in a few areas, vision is needed as it will give you the tactical knowledge of the game...For example, for a HB, vision will help you spot the holes and cutback lanes...So for a DE this could be used in the same situation except you are trying to bring down the HB. It will also help you spot gaps in between O-Lineman and areas to exploit in order to get to the ball carrier, but it is slightly more important for a speed/agility DE as you need to be able to spot the QB and take him down.

Tackling - Tackling, it is very simple as to why you may need it as a DE, it makes you more effective and gives you a higher chance at bringing the ball carrier down, whether it is the HB or the QB it will really help your game. Also tackling increases the radius in which you can tackle, so if you have evaded your blocker and are coming in for a sack on the QB it will give the QB less time to release the ball.

Balanced DE, SA’s...

SA’s for a balanced DE should be wisely spent, with you being a balanced player you need to concentrate harder on your attributes, therefore spend wisely...

Tunnel Vision – When this DE gets the QB in his sights, nothing is going to stand in his way. The Tunnel Vision skill gives him a bonus to speed and agility when rushing the passer. This skill is important for DEs who rush the passer a lot. They will be harder to stop once they are locked in. Additional Levels: Increases the chance of engaging Tunnel Vision, and increases the bonus to speed and agility.

Shed Block – Allows the player to get around blockers more easily, using a variety of swim, spin and rip moves. This skill is effective against all blockers, but it is most effective against pass blocking. Additional Levels: Increases chance to shed blocker.

Strong Base – This player has a powerful lower body, and knows how to use it well. The Strong Base skill gives him a bonus to pushing a blocker out of the way. This skill works best when used by players with high strength. Additional Levels: Increases the chance of the skill working, and increases the bonus to pushing the blocker away.

Balanced DE Summary...

So to build a good balanced DE you need to be spending more opoints on the sttrivbutes in order to bump up your build rather than spending points in SA’s, but when you do come to spend some points in those special abilities, make sure to do so wisely and make sure to suit them to your build, for example when making a balanced DE don’t go spending all the SA points you have saved on Pass Rushing abilities...

Speed And Agility DE

The speedy DE is the one to rack the sacks and stats on the team, he will be the one getting off the edge and taking down the QB and winning his team the game in many situations. He will constantly be trying to get around the blockers using an evasive rush, in GLB DE’s can rack up hundreds of sacks in merely a season, this is usually due to a speedy, agile build against a strength built O-Lineman.

Build Guide http://goallineblitz.com/game/forum_thread.pl?thread_id=654381
Major Attributes...Speed, Agility, Vision...

Speed – This is obviously the most important attribute for a speedy pass rushing DE, this combined with agility, the second most important, will rack you some real stats as speed and agility are king for these sorts of builds. Speed will enable you to, chase down the ball carrier, help you get round the lineman and to the QB and it can in some cases help you get off the line much quicker.

Agility – As I said above, speed ‘and’ agility are king for this sort of DE. The agility will enable you to put an evasive move on a strength built O-Lineman, and will also help with acceleration and reaching that maximum speed.

Minor Attributes...
Strength, Tackling...

Strength – Strength as a Speedy DE is still a handy attribute to have, as coming up against large strong blockers you will need to have some strength in order to compete in the slightest, also against run blocking it is handy to force the opposition into closing the gaps and move there O-Line backwards.

Tackling - Tackling, it is very simple as to why you may need it as a DE, it makes you more effective and gives you a higher chance at bringing the ball carrier down, whether it is the HB or the QB it will really help your game. Also tackling increases the radius in which you can tackle, so if you have evaded your blocker and are coming in for a sack on the |QB it will give the QB less time to release the ball.

Speedy, Agility DE, SA’s

Most of the SA’s for a pass rushing DE are very useful...

First Step - This player has a very fast reaction time. The First Step skill gives him a boost to acceleration when starting from a dead stop. This skill is very important for players who rely on speed to create separation from defenders or to keep up with a speedy offensive players. Additional Levels: Increases the chance of the skill working, and the boost to acceleration.

Change Direction - Gives the player the ability to change direction quickly without losing much speed. This skill is very important for catching speedy, agile ball carriers. Additional Levels: The angle at which the player can turn increases, while the speed lost in making the turn decreases.
Shed Block - Allows the player to get around blockers more easily, using a variety of swim, spin and rip moves. This skill is effective against all blockers, but it is most effective against pass blocking. Additional Levels: Increases chance to shed blocker.

But, The Most Important –

Tunnel Vision - When this DE gets the QB in his sights, nothing is going to stand in his way.

Speed Agility DE Summary...

So for a speedy DE, you obviously need speed and agility, it doesn’t really matter what order your try to soft cap them in as most succeed with either one of the attributes.

This here is a very giood clip of how much speed a DE can have...

http://goallineblitz.com/game/replay.pl?game_id=149154&pbp_id=4568394

Compare this to Flames54’s 108 Speed WR...

http://goallineblitz.com/game/replay.pl?game_id=139494&pbp_id=6478139

So as you can see having speed can be a real bonus, but you must not forget about those SA’s, tunel vision especially, this can rapidly improve your game...

I'm not commenting on this guide, but rather than making your own guide why not just follow the guide written by the owner of DE in the replay you posted of Julius Dee:

Not really. They're just changing blocking mechanics, not the DE itself.

The thing is mattlee123's highest level player is level 10. Even if he does GM some teams, with no actual experience of building a DE I don't think one should really compose a guide of something that they don't know that much about.

Every season something changes in the game, so I'd only really accept the build advice of someone who's been on a human team for at least 2 seasons and has experienced and adapted to the changes.

He retired all his players for a capped team this season.

One can take a DE pretty much any direction they please, however, I'll add that I believe the top skills for DE's are agility and vision. I don't necessarily say that they should be your highest attributes, rather they are just the most universally important. However you build your DE, these two att's will need to be pretty high...
