For CB is it better to play them close or medium basically which is more effective? Also what is the preferable split in the man/zone setting in the defensive settings?

Close/Medium or Close/Aggressive, depending how good your corners are, and how

Don't use the basic AI.
If you do, 100% man. If not, you can study the game and learn where zone is actually feasible, which is in a very few select scenarios.

Obviously I'm new, so if you leave basic page blank it will run off of the game plan in the defensive or offensive AI?

Correct. As long as you have every situation covered.
A good rule to follow when you're starting out with the AI is to do a little bit at a time. Don't try to create an entire scheme overnight. You'll never be able to track down any mistakes you make.
Set up a defense versus 1 or 2 formations at a time. Play a game. Study those formations and calls, tweak them if needed, and set up a couple more.
Same with the offensive AI. Try setting only 1st/2nd down at first, after you get your important stuff done, which is when to punt, go for it, and kick a FG.
Expect to either spend a ridiculous amount of time setting your AI or finding someone you TRUST to put together one for you.

What I mean to say is, use the basic AI for most situations, until you slowly develop your own "playbook" over time. Then you can just ignore the basic AI - If you have a situation covered in the advanced AI, it will take precedence and ignore the basic settings, for the most part.
