Forum > Position Talk > LB Club > Agility over Speed for a MLB?

Here's my question, most of the time the MLB plays the short middle zone. This goes from tackle to tackle, unless he's playing man. Anyways, I know Agility is more about acceleration that Speed, obviously, but wouldn't that be better than Speed itself?

For example, if a MLB is blitzing, and he has high Speed, it'll take him a little bit to start going, where if he had high Agility, he would shoot straight into the gap. Does this sound right? He could also accelerate pretty fast in between tackles.

I'm asking because I'm building a MLB, but I want to make sure I put in my SPs to the main attributes first. So, along with Vision, which is more important for a MLB, Speed or Agility?

speed, speed and speed. That said, you do need a healthy amount of agility but it doesn't need to be more than speed. You'd be surprised at the range a MLB has to cover.

i'd almost say about equal speed agility. both very important

but with lower speed , he would have nothing to accelerate too?

He does still have speed. Its not like he has 0 speed and 55 agi

yeah listen to everyone here. speed is the most important thing. you can run into the back sides of your defensive line really fast!!!

He has a point though. Agility helps with acceleration and with shedding blocks. As an MLB both are pretty important.

I'm of the school of thought that agility is more important because I value acceleration, cut speed/angle and shedding blocks more important than straight line speed, ESPECIALLY for LB's. Your LB isn't expected to run down the Steve Smith's and Larry Fitzgerald's of the world, that's your CB's job. He's there to cover the Jason Witten's, the Chris Johnson's, and the Wes Welker's of the world.

Your LB needs to read the play, then react to the ballcarrier. Rarely will your LB's first direction off the snap be directly towards the ballcarrier's route so he needs more of the attribute that gets him there quicker (not faster). In fact, after the boost to Agility in the acceleration formula before season 4, I'm surprised this issue is still so hotly contested in this forum.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about building 40 spd/60 agi LB's. Speed is also crucial to a successful LB; I would actually suggest softcapping that attribute first when creating an LB. But I would much rather have 50 spd/70 agi than 70 spd/50 agi... but that's just me.
