Close/medium/far distance? which is best to get picks??

I would say close.

Last 3 games I've had it at medium and aggressive and I've had 4 picks with 2 tds

Medium/Aggressive is the best for getting picks, but you'll have to settle for many more tackles as well, which hurts the defense over all.

Close/Medium is probably the best setting for overall defense, and you'll still get the occasional pick too. Just don't expect them to ever come like they did in seasons 2-3.
