Lunatic Syndicate can claim they are no longer lunatics. But I still know the truth.

The game was a lot better before networks were common. That's not their fault, as most of the loss has simply been due to great agents with huge personalities getting bored and leaving. Moreover, I think you're missing a key distinction here. Playing with agents you like is one thing. Having all dots reserved for a particular group is something else.

What are we discussing? Networks, guilds, alliances, etc are part of every game if it stays around for long enough. We're human beings and teaming up to accomplish more together than we could individually is essentially the story of the human race. Whether alliances or networks or whatever are good or bad for the game is pretty much moot. As long as human beings are playing the game, given enough time these will form.

It's also a truism that the longer a game runs the more it will stratefy in terms of ability level. So now we have a pool of people who really know what they're doing up at the top who would rather play ball with each other than with other worse players. And it is not an information hoarding issue either; the info on how to build any position is readily available. Have you ever been a build advisor for a team? It's maddening. You tell them exactly what the end result should look like, exactly how to get there, then 30% of the team doesn't follow the plan and they say things like, "well my builds are unorthodox but they get results (in regional pro)."

The point though is that the stratification of game ability is not related to information hoarding; it's just the natural progression of the game. These issues just get magnified in GLB because it is one of the very few MMOs that actually forces you to play and interact with other people extensively.

I think 30% is a VERY conservative number, tbh.

I agree, but it doesn't matter because the team will likely fold anyway.

This is not necessarily related to networks. One huge issue for this game has always been its age structure. The reason the game was so egalitarian in those early seasons was that everyone was within 2 seasons of each other. Another issue with the game is what teams should do once it's time to retire, also an age related question. Should they restart and drop way down to beginners? There wasn't even a way to do this (besides just losing for 5 seasons in a row) until relatively recently - it certainly wasn't built into the game. The other option would be to totally resign a new roster. This also was almost an impossibility if you hoped for any quality before plateau was introduced, because up until that point you needed to sign a whole new roster literally every season and builds matured for 10 seasons for 1 season worth of glory, so to speak.

There were many age based design flaws built into this game and networks were almost a necessity to address them. I would argue that networks were inevitable based on fundamental flaws in the way the league system and several age features were set up.
