Would it change your mind if they were banned for saying another user shouldn't be posting racist remarks?

Would it change your mind if they were banned for helping a kid with his algebra?

Would it change your mind if they were banned for passionately expressing their true feelings?

Would it change your mind if they were banned for repeatedly breaking forum rules, and attacking mods in PM's that banned them?

If only there was a rule that said you could lose forum privileges for abusing the PM, you would have a point.

If the forum ban is a punishment, then Bort and DD need to sack up and deny service. Right now they are essentially keeping the bad customers around to keep their cash flowing in while denying them only part of the service. [...] It would be good business to be in the customer service industry and not the customer punishment industry.

I understand and like what you're saying here: punish them enough to reduce their effect on other customers while keeping their money coming in. However, just because someone pays doesn't render them immune; they're still subject to Ts & Cs. I think that if administration were to punish violators to that extent, they'd want to do it in a way such that if they still wish to pay for the basic product without being able to interact with others, they could.

In a word, you are absolutely right that it would make things much more clear-cut if the punishment was a complete removal than a partial one.

With that being admitted, you can see why the current situation is unpalatable. It is inconsistent with the rules we are all expected to follow and stinks heavily of personal vendetta and stinks slightly of greed. I would much rather Bort and DD operated their business in the best interest of their good customers. Keep the trouble makers out of the public view, but let them come to our private forums.

The game is separate from the forums.

Team forums have been deemed part of the game by Bort and DD.

Private forums are not part of the game. They are a bonus, like the forums are. You agreed to the forum rules. That is what you will be removed from if you break those rules.

But if you check the forum rules there is nothing about private forums owned by others in there.

And to remark on your earlier comment about people thinking this is how it should have been all along, that's typically why suggestions are made, because people feel like that's how it should have been all along and they would like changed to that way.

Private Messages

* The private message system should not be used to spam other users with advertisements or requests. Repeated spamming will result in the offending account being banned from the site permanently.
* Do not use the private message system to send insults, racism, or personal attacks to other users.

Repeated improper use of the Private Message system may result in a permanent ban from the site.

So why are they having a forum ban?

I agree with that. However, some of the discussion haven't been about change, it's been about how it should have been all along.

Bort and DD have the right to either allow them to post in private forums, or not.

Not really, especially if I knew all of the above would result in the outcome. That's a choice you have to make.

In those cases it would be doing what you felt is right, and taking the consequences.

That's like asking if protecting a baby from a child abuser was against the law would I support someone who protected them. It's changing the context of the argument and is meant as a diversion from the real discussion.

This is what Bort and DD have deemed as a permanent ban from the site. It doesn't say you will be permanently banned from the game.

OK, show me where in these forum rules you see anything along the lines of:
-violating public forum rules affects private forum usage
-being banned from public forums affects private forum usage

I've already got a quandary for you:
* Private forum rules are a little more relaxed....You may talk about whatever you like in your private forum.
* General Rules regarding pornography, hate speech, racism, planning spam/hacking attempts, and illegal activity also apply to private forums.

So if someone did not get banned for pornography, hate speech, racism, planned attacks or illegal activity, they did not violate the private forum rules and should not be banned from using any private forums

First and foremost, if he would have contained it to the private forums then it wouldn't be against the rules. It wasn't contained there. So therefore its still against the rules.

Next?

No, but it would make sense to campaign against the law. This is what this past week has been about. There was a time when laws in this country were wrong. And you are acting just like the people did back then. Originally posted by 1950s dude

I don't think the current treatment of certain players is right, and I am speaking up against it. It seems like you are speaking against me for the pleasure of it or because you think anything Bort and DD have to say must be right because they said it.

(no quote pyramid ban, please)

I prefer simple algorithms with absolute endpoints, not this "just the tip" stuff...

...that didn't even remotely make sense. Who's "he", what's "it" that should have been contained to the private forums, and why does violation of the public forum rules, most of which do not apply to public forum usage, justify private forum suspension?
