Just a guess... but probably has something to with making it work on multiple platforms, as this is a browser based game. They have no way to control what types of computers and what there specs are to run this simulation and the graphics attached to it. Not to mention more detailed graphics exponentially increases the amount of code required to make it work and play smoothly.
Or... they simply like the old school feel.
