I like this idea, but it should probably be based on the attributes and abilities of the player as to how they would become a coach post season.
C's QB's on O can easily become line coaches / QB coaches / and possibly coordinators because of the level of interaction they have to have on the field and their reads of the game.
On D the same for an NT or MLB.
I'm not saying that other positions can't be coaches. I'm simply saying that the skill set of the play might be able to influence other players as they retire to become a coaching influence.
Specifically you could add player category to the roster as the title of Staff. Offenseive Staff, Defensive Staff, and Special Teams.
A great player with vision might be able to influence a +.5 growth per every two levels of development a player on the team has. Like the Mentor / Football Genius Veteran Abilities.
Of course, I could easily see this having many restrictions. Such as how to treat these staff members?
Should they be on a payroll as if they were a player?
Should the owner of said coach have to be of GM status on the team?

Bingo.
Here is what bort should do:
1. Implement this by the time decline starts.
2. Take a portion of the cash bort DOES NOT LOSE because players who hit decline are quitting the game (more so team owners of 90% season 1 guys).
I know I was thinking of giving GLB up about season 11 if decline really was a problem. Bort will probably about 30% of his clients to decline. This gives us an extra reason to see all of our hard earned investments (players) still reaping benefits.

I hope someone has looked into this more...
At the very least we could have new charictor "classes" to roll of coaches?
Im sure everyone would create coaches from day 1 of it going live and it could add alot of depth to the game. Even if this isnt the answer to forced retirement(i dont think it is) there is alot of good stuff here for sure

Just to play devils advocate how would you plan to have any sort of balance in this? What I mean is if lets say 2 evenly matched teams play one has a coach one doesnt, the one with the coach should win. There will be way more teams than coaches for a while so teams that have them will have a distinct advantage.

CPU Coaches?
It would be an issue for just the first few seasons till there were enough coaches out there.

Just an update/bump.
On my radar for sure, with season 10 coming up in a few months.
I have always wanted some sort of coach thing, even if it's not player characters.

I think more coaching style VA's would be easier than implementing a whole new system

Two options for creating coaches...
1) Right out of the gate as snot nosed rookie.
2) Player retirement.
