But I still firmly believe a QB is only as good as the team around him.
That's something I would have to disagree on. My QB, although STRONGLY outleveled this season after being moved up, still had a 100+ rating, 24 TDs and 5 INTs. He also broke 2500 yards while sharing snaps. Considering our team was outleveled by about 5-10 minimum in most games played, I think that's pretty damn good.I don't think that is quite what kr0n was talking about. If you had a high level QB surrounded by a low-level offense and he was still putting up really good numbers
that would be evidence of a QB not being held back by lack of talent around him. In this case if anything it would be the opposite, your low-level QB is trying to play UP to the level of the players around him, not the other way around.
It's impressive to compete well in a league where you are out-leveled, but the majority of the QB's stats came in blow out wins over a small number of teams. He played 4 games this season in which your team scored 91-238 points, or completely blew out the other team and so likely weren't out-leveled or at much disadvantage. 19 of his TDs and 1208 of his yards come in those games. That is 48% of his total yardage and 80% of his TDs. In the other 12 games he played he had 1,324 yards 5TD/5INT. All 5 of those TDs and came from 2 games.
In the 1st of those games he went 14/19 for 255 yards and 3 TDs in a 7 point win over a team that finished with your same 5-11 record as your team, again he was likely not as far behind the defense talent-wise as normal considering how they finished and the players currently left on their roster.
That leaves the game against a team that went 11-5 when your QB went 6/15 for 135 yards and 2 TDs. 107 of those yards and both TDs came on 2 long passes late in the 4th quarter when your team was already losing by 63 and then 56 respectively and during which the WR burns his CB and the QB makes a good throw.

Those would be the teams most on par with your player level so your QB didn't have to "play up to" their level, or at least not nearly as much as he did in all the other games, so they should mean less when examining just how well your QB played when he was asked to go into a game where he was outmatched.
In the remaining 11 Games against teams where he was really out-leveled he netted 951 yards (86.5 per game), 2 TDs (both of which were long passes in what could be called "garbage time") and 5 INTs. Not the strongest evidence that your QB was playing beyond the abilities of his teammates.
