The intential ground call was a 40 yard pass down the field so if the refs wanted to they could have made the judgement call that it wasn't purposely thrown away hence second down. Brady had plenty of time to throw the ball and wasn't under immediate pressure. I personally was fine with the call even being a Patriots fan but that call is judgement and when I think of intentional grounding it s a panacked QB throwing a ball out of bounds near the Line of Scrimmage to avoid a sack.

I likened it to getting pulled over for going 37 in a 35. Technically you are speeding but still you probably have a beef.

I just realized the OP wasn't talking about GLB but the Super Bowl that year... only took me 2 1/2 years to figure that out.

The tuck rule had been called numerous times before and numerous times since. The call was right because Brady was bringing the ball back in when he was hit.

NFL Rule 3, Section 22, Article 2, Note 2. When [an offensive] player is holding the ball to pass it forward, any intentional forward movement of his arm starts a forward pass, even if the player loses possession of the ball as he is attempting to tuck it back toward his body. Also, if the player has tucked the ball into his body and then loses possession, it is a fumble.

If anything Woodson should have been called for a personal foul for a illegal blow to the head.
HEAD SLAP
Article 2 A defensive player shall not contact an opponent above the shoulders with the palm of his hands
except to ward him off on the line. The exception applies only if it is not a repeated act against the same
opponent during any one contact.

LEGAL CONTACT
Article 3 A defensive player may use the palm of his hands on an
an opponent’s head, neck, or face only to
ward off or push him in an actual attempt to get at a loose ball.

Video of play is at 3:49 mark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDQAmuZ8t94&feature=player_embedded

You can blame the refs all you want but they had 22 Seconds, 2 Timeouts, 2 All Time great WRs, a QB playing just as good as any and the best kicker in the NFL with the ball on the 35. Do they put their faith in the guys they have? No, they put their faith in the coin toss.

we will never agree of course
(I could show you photos where Brady clearly had two hands on the ball -ie he had already tucked the ball away - when Woodson knocked it out ... which, as you point out, makes it a fumble.

but it doesnt matter - Patriots won the game ... it is fascinating to speculate what would have happened if Raiders had won though. Would Brady ever have emerged from Bledsoe's shadow ? Maybe not ...

I do love this photo though ... rich in symbolism !

But having a second hand on the ball doesnt mean its tucked back into his body. Both hands can touch the ball in the process of tucking it in.
