Problem is less with competition and more to do with the stagnant state of the sim. My interest was driven from always staying ahead of the game. Sitting around for 10 seasons catching everyone up and getting copy cat'd a million times over just kind of blew away my interest whatsoever.

Yup RNG. Sliding scale build in to player from -10% to +10 % Some players having a tendency to roll more positive days. with micro transactions to increase those odds.

I guess it's a different mindset between us or something. I always just wanted an offense that is run to my liking that could put me in position to win, but was capable of getting anywhere from throttled to throttling the opponent based on gameplan...and in the gameplan is where all the meat and potatoes lied.

You could have variety in HOW you attacked...IE: Running team...Passing team...balanced attack...On D, zone, man, blitz heavy etc....but it should still come down to who put up the better gameplan as compared to their opponent's. I mean, it's nice that you get a built-in build lead on others that provides you an edge, but the staggering differences in talent early on in this game ran off EVERYONE because that talent gap was so large...There was absolutely nothing that could be done coordinating-wise to overcome it in so many cases...so your option as a team owner/coordinator was start over your team from scratch (an ordeal well over a year to do) or patchwork together a recruiting class of an entire team (Good luck with that sh*t)....or...quit (DING DING DING).

The best case for long term success of this game was having a sim that rewards solid coordinating for their efforts...This game failed to do that for a long, long time...and thus it has languished. But it finally is in a state that it is much more possible than in the past. So that's what is sad about the whole thing. It's over before it truly began.
