No no no! I believe in Thunder Bay... and Queen City, and Omertá †, and Saskatoon, and... OK, maybe not mokan jayhawk. Basically, I want to see a 12-4 #1 seed, and at least two 10-6 teams miss the playoffs. Is that so wrong?

This conference is tight enough and crazy enough...these late season games actually mean a little something for pretty much everybody. Sorta cool, even is the sim is volatile.

Here's a summary of where the Eastern Conference teams stand after 14 games. Sorry, no playoff scenarios; hopefully someone smarter than me can use this summary to figure them out.

Clinched playoff spot
Amsterdam Space Cakes 11-3-0
Key wins: Fredericton, Axis, Algoma, Sainte-Foy
Key losses: Arkham
Remaining games: vs. Queen City, at GD: Chicago

Fredericton Mima Mounds 11-3-0
Key wins: GD: Chicago, Axis, Algoma, Queen City
Key losses: Amsterdam, Sainte-Foy
Remaining games: vs Thunder Bay, at Calgary

GD: Chicago Outfit 11-3-0
Key wins: Axis, Algoma, Sainte-Foy, Queen City, Arkham
Key losses: Fredericton
Remaining games: at mokan, vs Amsterdam

Not quite there
Axis: Serenity 10-4-0
Key wins: Algoma, Queen City, Arkham, Thunder Bay
Key losses: Amsterdam, Fredericton, GD: Chicago, Saskatoon
Remaining games: at Omertá †, vs Sainte-Foy

Algoma Arena Rockers 10-4-0
Key wins: Sainte-Foy, Queen City, Thunder Bay, Omertá †
Key losses: Amsterdam, Fredericton, GD: Chicago, Axis
Remaining games: vs Saskatoon, at Arkham

Sainte-Foy Nordiques 3.0 10-4-0
Key wins: Fredericton, Queen City, Saskatoon, Omertá †
Key losses: Amsterdam, GD: Chicago, Algoma, Thunder Bay
Remaining games: vs Arkham, at Axis

Queen City Black Cats 9-5-0
Key wins: Arkham, Thunder Bay, Saskatoon
Key losses: Fredericton, GD: Chicago, Axis, Algoma, Sainte-Foy
Remaining games: at Amsterdam, vs Omertá †

Arkham Asylum Jokers 9-5-0
Key wins: Amsterdam, Thunder Bay, Saskatoon
Key losses: Fredericton, GD: Chicago, Axis, Queen City, Omertá †
Remaining games: at Sainte-Foy, vs Algoma

Needs another win (or two)
Thunder Bay Wolverines 8-6-0
Key wins: Sainte-Foy, Omertá †
Key losses: Axis, Algoma, Queen City, Arkham, Saskatoon
Remaining games: at Fredericton, vs mokan

Saskatoon Silverbacks 8-6-0
Key wins: Axis, Thunder Bay
Key losses: Sainte-Foy, Queen City, Arkham, Omertá †
Remaining games: at Algoma, vs Bastard Sons

Omertá † 8-6-0
Key wins: Arkham, Saskatoon
Key losses: Algoma, Sainte-Foy, Thunder Bay
Remaining games: vs Axis, at Queen City

Not even close
The Bastard Sons of Doug Flutie 3-11-0
Nebraska Maniac Gorillas 2-12-0
Calgary Destroyers 1-13-0
mokan jayhawk 1-13-0
Manitoba Matadors 0-14-0

Even though these three games will not count toward head-to-head tiebreakers, I'm listing them here for posterity to show how crazy-tight this conference has been:
Thunder Bay Wolverines d. Amsterdam Space Cakes 23-17 (game 3, http://goallineblitz.com/game/game.pl?game_id=2011978)
Saskatoon Silverbacks d. Fredericton Mima Mounds 13-9 (game 3, http://goallineblitz.com/game/game.pl?game_id=2012007)
Omertá † d. GD: Chicago Outfit 31-27 (game 2, http://goallineblitz.com/game/game.pl?game_id=2012019)

Yes, each of the three teams that are nearing elimination have a win over one of the three teams that have already clinched.

I think this may be the closest conference I've been in since I started playing GLB. No clear cut "dominant" team and 11 teams with a chance in the playoffs, along with the possibility that 10-6 team(s) could be on the outside looking in.

I'm working my way through the various scenarios so that I can present them in a meaningful way. I vaguely remember there being an issue with 4-or-more-way tiebreakers where, if there's only two (or less than N) teams left after the head-to-head round-robin, it goes on to the points-allowed tiebreaker instead of going to head-to-head between just those two teams (i.e., starting over as teams are eliminated).

For example, if team A (Omertá †) defeats team B (Queen City) and both teams end up in a 4-or-more-way tiebreaker, say with team C (Arkham), team D (Thunder Bay) and team E (Saskatoon), and the first tiebreaker (number of head-to-head wins against the other tied teams with the same record) leaves only teams A and B (3-1, if you must know), you'd think that team A would earn a higher seed than team B because of the head-to-head win between them. But as I remember it being put into practice, if team B had given up fewer points during the season, they would get the higher seed instead because that's the next tiebreaker. The points-allowed tiebreaker makes sense if there were only three teams tied and they'd traded wins rock-paper-scissors-style, but not so much when there's more than three teams.

Anyway, if the tiebreakers work the way I think they do, then Queen City already has clinched, and Omertá could win and still be left out. Regardless, Thunder Bay and Saskatoon already are eliminated; sorry, guys.

That isn't strictly correct, you could still have Jokers win to clinch 7th, QCBC lose and Omertá clinches 8th on tiebreak. Pretty sure Wolverines and Silverbacks are out no matter what though, I can't think of a scenario where Omertá doesn't get at least 8th with a win.

Omertá can only win a head-to-head tiebreaker against Queen City if it's just those two teams. I do expect Thunder Bay to defeat mokan jayhawk, which led me to the dilemma I outlined above.

Speaking of which, the "scenario where Omertá doesn't get at least 8th with a win"? Omertá wins, Thunder Bay wins, Arkham wins, Saskatoon loses. That's one that I'm certain QCBC takes 8th on points allowed.

If it comes down to points allowed then Arkham and QCBC are in the drivers seats.. and QCBC has wins against Arkham, Saskatoon and Thunder Bay already as well...

OK, I think I've got it. To keep things simple, I've assumed two outcomes as certain: Fredericton wins over Calgary, and Thunder Bay wins over mokan. All other outcomes are up for grabs.

Manitoba Matadors 0-15-0

* - Queen City and Omertá † survive all 4-way and 5-way tie scenarios by virtue of their wins over common opponents. There is some discrepancy over whether the next tiebreaker is points allowed (Queen City) or head-to-head (Omertá †). All scenarios assume the former; if it ends up being the latter, move Queen City down one seed and move Omertá † up one.

Turns out all that stuff wasn't even needed, the teams took their play-off spots outright

Now for upset o'clock in the play-offs.
