Ah dayum.
I just had a long reply to your post Been, nice pleasant constructive.
My PC ate it.
Suffice it to say "Nu Uh". "Not enough Time" "My Team was winning rings until losing in the playoffs in OPro in S16+17 so I didnt even bother to worry about it till then" "Res Ipsa Loquitor, the silly results speak for themselves I do not need to know the ST system to know its broken therefore", "closer games are more entertaining and less likely to lose players", and 255-0 is shorthand for all the lousy stats, including blow outs of more than 60 points etc.
In terms of what I would like to see in making better stat comparisons, 40 Dash times lowest 10 speed highest 160, so range of 6 second to 4 second dashes spread over those 150 points. Meaning the difference in yards per second from 140 to 120 would be a half yard a second or so all else being equal. So a 160 speedster is going 10 yards per second, a speed 10 QB is moving 6.67 yards per second. Still a difference but less than I think we see now. Same could be done with all stats based on things like cone drill speeds, bench presses, etc.
In terms of how to impose fair catches etc to ease up FF on returns (or FF in general) I have said it before but here in more detail
Each fumble decreases the chances of future fumbles by the player, doubly so in returns since thats priority one on returns. Realistic and better game play. Penalty is that the player has a lower chance to break tackles dive for yards etc.
Fair Catch parameters increase per prior fumble. If the chance is 10% per unblocked tackler inside of 15 yards now, make it go up 5% to 15% with each prior fumble, for example.
Tucking and Taking the Tackle would work by assessing the number of unblocked tacklers in bound, at the point where the game currently checks to see if the player decides to take an evasive turn etc, each unblocked tackler over one should decrease the chance of choosing to evade or power/spin through or to dive for yards etc, and instead result in a chance to tuck and take the tackle. Tucking would reduce the chances of Fumbling, Monster Hits, Head Hunter, Big Hit, etc and eliminate checks for Dive for Yards, Tenacious, First Down VA, Spin etc. This could be a slider for all ball carriers, but would be doubly likely to trigger for Return men and QBs and have double the effectiveness for QBs (aka the QB slide).
Easy ways to avoid the FF silliness and better reflect real football.
