Anyone else impressed by how close each game was? I'd have thought at least one or two regions might stand out as "weak sisters" but every team certainly made a game of it in the first round. The Europa and Equatorial Cups were particularly exciting games to "watch." Great stuff!

DDL can EASILY make the case that they were the #2 team in USA Pro least year.

16-0 and only loss to the champs is a pretty good argument imo.

Actually the #2 team in USA Pro for last season was in this tournament. The runner up in any championship game is usually crowned the #2 team, with the #1 title going to the winner. Regardless of their regular season, this tournament was about getting all of the PRO league title winners to face off. When the actual winner wasn't available, the runner up took their place. I'm sure the case can be made that the "best team" in the regular season wasn't the #1 team at the end of the season in several leagues in GLB. But that's why the playoffs are played.

I think that was the whole point of every team in this tournament, to see how we stacked up against the other championship teams from the rest of the Pro GLB regions. I'm very impressed by the play and competition of everyone in the tournament as well. Makes the idea of having a GLB sponsored tournament like this even more interesting imo

Why weren't the Nighthawks able to participate?

Bort said it is never going to happen. Get on board for the ultimate league idea. A real GLB tournament isn't going to happen.

I understand how they picked the Saints, but the West was better than the East last year and is so again this year. Off the top of my head, I think DDL was closer to beating the Nighthawks in the playoffs than the Saints also. Not to mention that the Saints aren't even as good this year as they were last year.

(thus the problem with tournaments based on last season's results and played this season's roster).

Regardless, all are top 25 or so teams, and at this point, they are all fairly evenly matched.

Last point I want to make is that they should have invited the winners of the 8 highest ranked leagues and not just the 8 Pro leagues. USA AAA champ was better and played tougher competition than 3-4 of these league on the way to their crown.

yes, it is hard to crown a GLB champion when the #1 ranked team in the #1 league doesn't participate.

I faced a similar problem this year when I was trying to do my tournament

I had nothing to do with organizing the GLB World Cup, so I am not 100% certain, but I believe that all former champions but one (that disbanded) were invited to play. If the #1 team in the #1 league doesn't participate, that's really their own fault, isn't it?

Because they chose not to play in the tournament.

Enough of the USA Bias already. All these teams (minus one) were PRO league champs and are more than deserving to be in this tourney. When the USA AAA champ wins PRO, they'll be invited to this type of tourney as well.

Nobody said this was a tournament for the best. It's for the champions, simple as that.

...tournament for the PRO champs, simple as that. I wasn't going to get into ranking teams or conferences or regions or anything else. If someone wants to make a tournament for the teams they feel are the "best", have at it. The only "ranking" done in this tournament was the 1-8 seeds, and they were put forth for suggestions from every team owner involved. The resulting seeds were not argued by anyone involved. I invited EVERY Pro league champ from last season to participate (other than Barger Hill which disbanded). Those that chose not to participate did so on their own accord. I'm extremely happy with the way the tournament has gone down so far and look forward to the next two rounds, as I hope others do too.

Speaking of, rd 2 has been scheduled. Announcement to follow soon...

So, who decides who's "better"?

If those AAA teams are so awesome, they'll be playing in a season or two once they've torn up AAA and are beating people in the pros.

All the other "League X is better than League Y" garbage is just people flapping their gums with things that can't be proven.

When you do a tournament of any kind, you simply decide the scope and do the best you can.

In the planning stages for this tournament we even talked about a champions league, but decided it would take too much work and too long of a time commitment. A 3 round single elimination tournament of the Pro Champs was both exciting and, just as important, feasible.

SI's tournament was a good idea, but organizing something of that size in this game is pretty difficult and frustrating.

I hope that Bort will eventually take this idea and make it official. Take the 8 Pro champs each season and have an official offseason tournament. It could easily be done in 3 days or 6 days and would give people something to watch, talk and complain about during an otherwise busy but boring offseason.
