LOL yes as a matter of fact I won the University of Michigan Chess Championship
It's a great story...
I tried out for the pool championship, and it had a large number of participants, was basically an 8 hour event. I won the winner's side of the bracket so I had about 2 hours before the loser's bracket settled so to kill time I walked out of the billiards room and didn't know there was a chess tournament right across the hall.
I walked in and I said what's the deal with this?? They said, its the UofM Chess tournament starting in about 5 minutes. I said sweet, can I get in?? They said are you a student? Yes I am, here's my ID, and I entered. There were only about 10 people that showed up for this compared to 50 or so that showed up for pool. The games were 10 minute clocked games and I won the whole thing in like a little over an hour's time, and still had a half hour before my next pool match!
Then for the pool finals, I had to play the loser's bracket winner and he had to beat me 2 times to win it all, and he did, so I took 2nd place. I played him in the very first match of the tournament and beat him to send him to the loser's bracket, and he went through the whole bracket and then beat me twice to win it.
He was a great player, I was lucky to beat him the first time, he was a 45 year old grad student and a VERY top notch player, there was nobody in the place that was a real threat to beat either of us, we were just way on a different level than the room, but he was on a whole different level than myself, I didn't even come close to beating him in the last 2 matches. The only way I was able to beat him the first time is I won the majority of the 7 games (9-ball) by getting some lucky combos that opened up and I think I won like 2 games on the break too, and barely beat him 7-6 or something like that.
